We look at problems and prospects of warehouse automation. We determine the key tasks of warehouse automation and analyze its advantages, the main of them being the optimization of storage area, speeding up the goods flow, simplifying the control over stock movement and shipment as well as the analysis of the remainder of stock, labor costs cutting, increasing staff control, theft minimization, increasing the efficiency of using warehouse equipment. We reveal possible limitations concerning warehouse automation, namely high cost of the system introduction, lack of relevant data, insufficient formalization of warehouse processes, lack of personnel skills to work with the system in question. We assess the effectiveness of warehouse automation applying Warehouse Management System.
