We present a literature review reflecting the main modern concepts of cell death as an important element of the cell life cycle, its types, patterns and mechanisms of its course, and its role in the pathogenesis of various diseases. We demonstrate the potential of studying the mechanisms of cell death from the point of view of organism ageing and protection of cells from various damages; the development of innovative medical technologies for the treatment of a wide range of diseases is described. New directions in the study of cell death reflect the trends in the development of molecular biology and pharmacology in such areas as cytoprotection, oncology, and reparative medicine. We provide the data concerning the reversibility at a certain stage of changes caused by the induction of apoptosis in cell culture which characterizes a special process known as anastase as a mechanism for restoring the functional activity and structure of cells at early stages of programmed cell death caused by inducing impact.
